Research Context
Per Met API (objectID 42545): dated 17th–18th century, Qing dynasty. The Friedsam Collection, Bequest of Michael Friedsam, 1931. Budai (Maitreya) is one of the most popular Buddhist subjects in Dehua sculpture, with his laughing face and rotund belly widely recognized across East Asian folk religion.
