Research Context

Per V&A API (system number O166082): Bodhidharma (Damo, active AD 470–616), Indian monk who travelled to China and founded Chan Buddhism (Zen). Standing on water waves, wearing shroud, carrying a shoe — the iconography of "crossing the Yangzi on a reed." Base concave and unglazed. Salting Bequest, 1910. V&A re-dated this piece in October 2011 from 1620–1720 to 1800–1900 — a notable case of scholarly re-attribution. 1952 gallery label stated "probably 18th century." Currently on display in Room 44 (China), Case CA56 (same case as He Chaozong Guanyin C.546-1910).
