Research Context

Per AIC API (artwork ID 12509): attributed to He Chaozong (active c. 1600), Dehua, Fujian province. Lucy Maud Buckingham Collection. At 47.1 cm, this is the largest Dehua Guanyin in AIC holdings, comparable in scale to V&A C.546-1910 (47.6 cm) and Palace Museum Gu00144997 (46.5 cm) — all among the grandest surviving He Chaozong Guanyin figures. The Buckingham Collection is one of Chicago's most important Asian art holdings, contributing 12 Dehua pieces to AIC.
